In April, we celebrated the 46th anniversary of the very first Earth Day. When Earth Day was started in 1970 it was the organizers hope to not only raise awareness of environmental issues but to cause people to take positive action toward change. One way that that change has happened is that as consumers we have all learned to be environmentally conscious. This has led to positive changes in the jewelry industry to be certain and one of the stewards of that change is Forevermark™, a part of the De Beers group of companies . Forevermark is committed to the unwavering and passionate pursuit of the world’s most beautiful diamonds, brought to you with integrity.
One of the central commitments made by Forevermark is the protection of wild habitats, the species they support, and the wider ecosystems of which they are a crucial part. Everyone at Forevermark, as well as the expert craftsmen who cut, polish and manufacture Forevermark diamonds and jewelry, adheres to the highest standards of environmental management. Forevermark also helps to fund vital projects that protect and nurture the beauty and diversity of the natural world. For every acre of land used for mining by Forevermark’s parent company, The De Beers Group of Companies, five acres are dedicated to the conservation of nature, building thriving ecosystems with healthy populations of native wild animals and plants.
In total, almost 444,790 acres of land around The De Beers Group of Companies’ mines are set aside for conservation. In Botswana, Jwaneng mine operates a 42,008 acre Game Park, which is home to more than 1,700 animals and hosts a field unit for Cheetah Conservation in Botswana. Along the Diamond Route, various conservation, research and breeding programs contribute to monitor and protect wild animals. These programs include a Rhino sanctuary reserve. Along with all their other conservation efforts, De Beers South Africa also co-founded the National Biodiversity and Business Network (NBBN) and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, to help and encourage other businesses to protect local wildlife and their habitats.
Not only is Forevermark committed to preserving the natural world, they are also committed to mining diamonds that are conflict free. Each Forevermark diamond is carefully tracked throughout it’s journey from the mine to our stores. Forevermark diamonds go above and beyond the Kimberly Process to consider the profile of every diamond community that might be a source for Forevermark, including the prevailing standard of human rights, the political climate and the socio-economic situation. The Forevermark commitment to integrity includes giving back to the women and children of each community they become a part of, through education, training, healthcare and the support of women in small business.
The Forevermark icon and unique identification number inscribed on each Forevermark diamond represent this commitment to integrity. The inscription is 1/20th of a micron deep, or 1/5000th the width of a human hair. It is inscribed on the table facet of the diamond using proprietary technology developed by The De Beers Group of Companies. The inscription can only be seen through a Forevermark Viewer, at an Authorized Forevermark Jeweler. The inscription number is also recorded on the individual Forevermark identification card that accompanies each diamond. It represents Forevermark’s promise that the diamond has been responsibly sourced.
