The Kimberly Process Certification Scheme was established in 2003 to monitor the trade of rough diamonds and to eradicate conflict diamonds from the world’s diamond supply. The international system was initiated by the United Nations and works to ensure that diamond purchases are not financing illegal activities such as unethical working environments or violence by rebel movements to undermine legitimate governments. To assure compliance, all international shipments of rough diamonds are sent to cutting centers in tamper-resistant containers and have a KP certificate seal that validates they are conflict free diamonds.
